Are macros still the best way to automate formatting of Word documents? Or should I be using the Office API

I’m back tech writing after a few years away and in the meantime the Cloud has taken over. We produce our docs in Word and will most likely continue doing so. I’ve been creating some macros to perform a lot of the manual formatting. For example, to merge table empty table cells and apply formatting to specific table entries. I see a lot of commentary about VBA no longer being developed and potentially support being discontinued but when I look at the Office API it seems like overkill for what I want to do. Thoughts? Should I being using the API? Am I the only person still using VBA macros?
